A Canada Shopping list
I was reading this post over at Diva Rachel’s blog I started thinking, “damn, she’s right.” Then I got to the end:
The tourist dollars alone would pay for the speed train(s) within 10 years. (Not counting domestic tourism.)
We are losing out on a great resource. Free foreign cash flow.
And I don’t see anyone addressing this issue.
Now, I know I may be spitting on the legacy of my blogging forefathers, but don’t we have at least a partial responsibility to think practically when we discuss (or critique) politics? Is the shotgun approach (which I am certainly guilty of employing) to “solving” Canada’s problems legitimate? To wit, I’m going to make a top-ten list of specific things I would like the Federal government (for example) to address. I’d like you all to do the same...
- Meeting our Kyoto requirements
- “Fixing” this fiscal imbalance
- Restoring the Kelowna agreement
- Creating a national daycare plan
- Extending our sovereignty over the Arctic
- Creating a national infrastructure development plan
- Developing a national municipalities agenda
- Making the EI program actually work for unemployed workers
- Scrapping the CRTC and creating a new, effective and balanced regulatory body
- Shift the tax burden back towards consumption taxes.
Now, naturally there are going to be a lot of things left out of a list like this, and everyone will disagree with some (or all) of it; but we can all agree that the government can only focus on (and afford) a few things at a time. Shouldn’t we as bloggers at least try to maintain a similar focus?
Rail transportation is one of the most efficient forms of transportation, so that helps #1 in a distinct and measurable way. Do you know how many people take short haul flights (like Toronto to Ottawa) each day? It’s crazy.

I know, and agree.

I see your and her points. I think we need to co-opt hers into your list (or my list, or whoever list). As Red J suggested, kill two birds with one stone.
Transportation options in this country blow. We need better mass transit options to get more cars off the road. If that increases tourism revenue, then bonus!

Don’t mention it… I was after all criticizing you (a bit).
