Is the number of Liberal leadership candidates not bordering on the ridiculous? It used to be about who was actually going to run for it, now it’s about who isn’t going to run.
I realize though that, when I look at the candidates themselves, there are a lot of people I like and who would make good Prime Ministers. I support many of their policies and even though politics is a dirty game, I believe they are good people. Ken Dryden, Gerard Kennedy, Scott Brison, Bob Rae, Carolyn Bennett (somewhat) and even, grudgingly, Michael Ignatieff would all be good leaders and have agreeable policies.
My favourite at this point is Stephane Dion. He has a strong record as environment minister as well as in intergovernmental affairs, and has a very classy and low-key approach to politics. I wouldn’t have expected him to run but he is an ideas man and probably more passionate than people realize. Listening to his speech when he announced his candidacy, I was greatly impressed with the passion and sincerity he brought towards environmental issues. It sounded more like Greenpeace than Ottawa. There seemed to be a willingness to cut through the political spin and bureaucracy to get down to some serious solutions to the environmental crisis that is looming.
I shall reserve complete judgement however until more information comes forward over the course of the campaign, and until I do some more research myself.
So while it may seem ludicrous to have so many candidates, perhaps it’s a good thing for the Liberal party because the odds are they will choose someone with credibility, sound policies and hopefully a bit of honesty.
